What transmission do I have in my Jeep Wrangler?
Finding a correct replacement transmission for your vehicle starts with identifying the what type it has. Whether you have a Wrangler, a Grand Cherokee, or a Liberty, you can find out exactly what type of transmission your Jeep has under its hood. Jeep used about 18 different models over the years. The 545RFE, 722.6, and A518 are common automatic models. Some models like 42RE came on V6 engines, and others like 46RE and 46RH came on V8 engines. These V8 engines have different models because of different engine sizes like 44RE, which is on the 5.2L/5.9L V8 units while the 45RFE was added around 1999 and was for the smaller 4.7L V8 engine. AW4 was only used in the models built in 1993.
Assuming that the paperwork you got with your vehicle does not include the model it has, you have two options for finding out. The first option is to grab something to write with and check the transmission for codes. A tag should be near the location of the dipstick. There is a metal plate on it which you can clean off with your rag. This plate will tell you the model number which is typically a combination of letters and numbers like AX5 or AX15.
Less handy owners can opt to instead write down the Vehicle Identification Number which is located on the dashboard and is visible through the window. They can call one of our Smart Parts operators toll free to run your vehicle VIN code. Using the this number, we will tell you whether you have something like a 31RH or a A999, or maybe you have the NV3550 or 42RLE model.
